Empathy: The Greatest Research Tool • THINK Global Research

Some of us at THINK have started our careers in clinical psychology. Working in that field meant being exposed to some pretty heartbreaking situations. While we believe that clinical psychology is still one of the most interesting fields to work in, there was one common denominator governing our decisions to move to the commercial field. That factor was empathy – we just couldn’t disconnect from what was happening with the patients, and it became all consuming.

However, the same quality is what we believe now helps us be the best researchers we can be. Empathy is what allows up to put ourselves in other people’s shoes when designing questions, research methodologies and reporting the findings. Empathy is what allows us to think on the spot and be flexible enough with our research to not miss out on potential unplanned new directions.  And empathy enables us to think about our clients’ needs when we’re conducting research, reporting and collaborating to apply our findings back to their business. Because at the end of the day we’re not in the business of understanding charts, we’re in the business of understanding people.
