“When I Look at Numbers, I See Stories” • THINK Global Research

We once spoke to a friend who is an accountant. He spoke of his job with such passion, interest and enthusiasm that we couldn’t help but ask the question – “what made you want to grow up and become an accountant?” (not because we don’t think it’s a great job, we were simply trying to understand what made him so passionate about it). After a long pause, his response was “well, other people may see my job as just dealing with numbers. But when I look at numbers, I see stories”.

What a powerful way of explaining the art of data analysis. As researchers, we all could relate. While we may produce charts and graphs and run multiple-regression analyses, it’s the stories that these numbers tell that matter. Stories about real people. Stories about what people do in various situations. Stories about how the smallest change can create a significant impact. And we love telling these stories.
