Digital trends for Gen YOLO • THINK Global Research

YOLO. You. Only. Live. Once.

Generation Y, sometimes referred to as the Millennial generation, encompasses those people born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s. Members of this generation are known for their relaxed outlook on life, placing greater importance on experience than ownership and rarely planning as far ahead as tomorrow’s breakfast.

Now that even the youngest of this tech-savvy generation are entering adulthood, the ripples of their digitised lives are flowing through into the world of business. Gen Y grew up through the period of intense information dissemination that was the epoch of internet popularisation. As such, they have had access to the internet, blogs and social media for most (if not all) of their lives.

This generation constitute 20% of the Australian population and nearly half of them are university educated. Consequently, elucidating and capitalizing on Gen Y behaviour and digital interaction is a critical key to success for many companies. As illustrated in the attached infographic, generation Y digital behaviour is varied from that of previous generations and are most effectively reached through tailored marketing approaches.
